Paper by Christophe Rhodes, 5 February 2004. It examines "the use of read-time feature conditionals, with particular emphasis on writing portable Common Lisp code which aspires to both forwards- and backwards-compatibility". After an introduction and an historical perspective, the paper reviews existing practices in using read-time conditionals, and provides some recommendations.
